Zero-fee UPI payments for restaurants: how they work
By Heisnam Pravin Singh · Updated 29 October 2026 · 6 min read
UPI is how most guests in India now prefer to pay. For a restaurant, the question isn't whether to accept UPI, but how: straight to your own UPI ID, or through a payment gateway. The difference matters for your fees and for how payments get confirmed.
Two ways to accept UPI
Straight to your UPI ID
The guest pays your business UPI ID (for example from a QR code at the table or on their order screen) and the money lands in your bank account directly. In India, UPI payments to merchants carry no merchant discount rate (MDR) under current rules, so you keep the full bill amount.
The catch: your system doesn't automatically know a payment arrived. Someone has to check it, usually by looking at the bank or UPI business app and marking the order as paid.
Through a payment gateway
A gateway (such as Paytm, Razorpay or Cashfree) takes the payment on its own page and tells your system the moment it succeeds, so orders are confirmed automatically. In exchange, gateways usually charge a fee on each payment, and settle the money to your bank after a short delay. Check each provider's current pricing for UPI and card payments.
| Direct to your UPI ID | Payment gateway | |
|---|---|---|
| Fee per payment | None | Usually a percentage |
| Confirmation | Staff check and mark paid | Automatic |
| Money reaches you | Immediately | On the gateway's settlement schedule |
| Setup | A UPI ID | Business KYC and approval |
Which should you choose?
For a small café or a restaurant with a few tables, direct UPI is often enough: the fees saved add up over a month, and checking a payment takes seconds. A gateway starts to make sense when you have many online orders at once, takeaway or delivery customers who aren't in front of you, or no one free to check payments. Many restaurants use both: direct UPI as the default and a gateway as a backup.
How to confirm UPI payments safely
- Check your own bank or UPI business app, not the guest's screen. A screenshot or a “payment successful” screen can be faked or show a payment to someone else.
- Match the amount exactly, and the time, before marking an order paid.
- Note the UPI reference (UTR) if there's any doubt. Every UPI payment has a unique 12-digit reference.
- Turn on payment sound alerts on the phone that receives payments, so staff hear each one arrive.
- Use a business UPI ID (from your bank or a business UPI app). Some apps limit payment links to personal UPI IDs.
Refunds
If a guest paid and an item is cancelled, return the difference the same way, by UPI to the number they paid from, or in cash, and keep a note of it. Gateways let you refund from their dashboard.
How Takane Serve handles UPI
Takane Serve shows each guest a UPI QR code for the exact amount of their order, payable straight to your UPI ID with no fees. Staff confirm it with one tap on the kitchen screen. If you want automatic confirmation too, you can connect your own Paytm Business account as an optional backup. Refunds owed after a change or cancellation are tracked on the order until you mark them refunded. Try it free.
